Road Biking

Photo of
road biker No matter what the season, any road you take from the house or the cottage is a scenic trip by bicycle.   Biking Rte 6 from Milford through Hawley and on to Honesdale, is not only beautiful, but there are many historical sights along the way.   It is a very challenging ride from the house and cottage East to Milford and an easier ride (less mountainous) West to Honesdale.

Follow Rte 590 West along the Lackawaxen River from Hawley, or Rte 507 South along Lake Wallenpaupack.   Rtes 434 and 739 are both scenic and lightly traveled by cars.   There are also many well-paved and seldom traveled "back country" roads that wind through woods and along farm fields.

Biking is encouraged in Pike and Wayne Counties and Bicycle Pa. Rte signs and "Share The Road" signs are frequently seen.   There are plenty of road maps that cover both counties at the cottage.

Mountain Biking

mountain biking There are numerous trails open for mountain biking both in the nearby Delaware State Forest and Promised Land, which has designated biking trails for all ages.   All hiking, snowmobiling, ATV, game lands trails, and utility line trails are open for riding unless otherwise posted.   These include Blooming Grove trail system and Thunder Swamp trail system which are strictly for hiking.

Utility line trails, which run up and down over the mountains through beautiful wooded terrain, are quite challenging and may not be suitable for young children.   Hemlock Walk cottage has trails very close by and within riding distance.   Other trails are a short drive away.

Maps of the trails can be found at the property.

Photo of
boaters Whether you're bringing a boat or plan to rent one, the lake region of Pike County has plenty to offer.   For boating and fishing rules, regulations, permits, safety etc. see PA Fish & Boat Commission.

Lake Wallenpaupack and nearby Fairview Lake are both large enough to accommodate the big power boats as well as pontoons, smaller motorized fishing vessels, and sailboats.   Kayaks, canoes and rowboats also use these lakes on calm days.   Terrific for water skiing, wind surfing and jet skiing.

There are also many smaller lakes in the area that are super for smaller boats with small outboard and electric motors as well as canoes, kayaks, rowboats, rafts, tubes and paddle boats.   These include (and we recommend) Fairview Lake, White Deer Lake, Shohola Lake, Pecks Pond, Promised Land Lake and Decker Pond.   Feel free to take the canoe at the house to any of these lakes.

If you're staying at Hemlock Walk cottage, You can rent a slip on Lake Wallenpaupack if you'd like to keep your boat there.   Slips are approximately 3 miles from the cottage and are subject to availability.   You can also keep your boat at the cottage and launch it daily at any of the nearby lakes. All have free public launches. The Fairview Lake boat launch is 1/2 mile down the road and is ours to use, although you will have to bring your boat back to the cottage when you're finished each day.   The cottage has plenty of boat parking.

Pickerel.   These waters embrace thousands of acres and contain a wide variety of both cool and warmwater species.   Some are easily accessed by roadways while others are more remote and allow fishermen and women the pleasure of hiking through wood and glade to reach them.   Many have access for boats and offer places to fish from the shoreline.   The following list of Pike County waters offering the best fishing:

Shohola Lake area off of scenic Rte 6 has some very nice trails also for all levels of skiers.   The main trail that goes around the lake is especially beautiful with many off- shoots.   There are some steep and winding sections too.   To view this area and other Pike County game lands that also have trails.   Go to PA Game Commission.   Click on Pike County.   State game lands #180 and #183 are closest to the house.   There are plenty of maps at the house to guide you around.   All of the above areas have parking.

snowshoer There are miles of trails for snowshoers, from flat and easy to hard and steep (power-line trails).   Many nice private trails can be found a short walk from the front door.

There are also a lot of public trails in the State Parks and State forest.   Promised Land State Park, which also contains Bruce Lake Natural Area, and the Blooming Grove Trail System, have miles of scenic wooded trails, as does the Thunder Swamp Trail System where there are designated trails just for hiking and snowshoeing.   All these trails are within a short drive from the house.   Maps of these areas can also be found at the house.   Parking is available at all locations.   To view these public trails and the areas they cover, go to the following websites:

For Promised Land and Bruce Lake: Promised Land.  You can also email them for snow and weather conditions and other information at: Promised Land or call 570-676-3428.

For state forest lands: Delaware State Forest.

PP&L Maintains the Shuman Point Natural Area located on Rte 590W about 1-2 miles west of Rte 6.   See directions and the map at the property.   This area is 250 acres of woods with a 3 mile trail along Lake Wallenpaupack.   There are some steep sections, so be careful.

There is a nice ½ mile trail behind Wallenpaupack high school that also runs through the woods along the lake.   It is a 1 mile round trip and an easy trail.

There is also a trail running from Rte 402 back to White deer Lake, around the lake and back out to 402.   There is a parking area there on 402.   Actually it's a gravel road that's rarely used in Winter (or Summer for that matter).   It is about 3-4 mile round trip, or 6-8 miles if you go all the way around and back to the same parking area.   It is mostly flat showshoeing.

Shohola Lake area off of scenic Rte 6 has some very nice trails also for all levels of skiers.   The main trail that goes around the lake is especially beautiful.   Many off-shoots there.   Also, you will find some steep and winding sections.   To view this area and other Pike county game lands that also have trails, go to PA Game Commission.   State game lands #180 and 183 are closest to the house.   There are plenty of maps at the house showing the location of these areas.

All the above areas have parking.   Call 570-676-3428 for snow and weather conditions.
